School Year Dance Classes

OPA’s Dance program operates on a 36-week, full school year session. However classes may be joined on a prorated basis at any time. The 2018–2019 dance class season runs from September 3, 2018 - June 1, 2019.

Early Dance Education

CREATIVE MOVEMENT
For dancers ages 2-3. Specifically designed for our youngest dancers, this class focuses on motor skills, coordination, and confidence in movement while engaging children in stimulating songs and dance activities. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

DANCING ACROBATS
For dancers ages 3-5. This 18-week class offers the perfect combination of gymnastics and dance for preschool and kindergarten-aged students. During the first 30 minutes of class, the students engage in movement through self-exploration and beginning ballet instruction. The final 30 minutes of class is spent participating in group activities in addition to balance beam, bars, and tumbling skills in our fully equipped gym.

LEARN TO DANCE
For dancers ages 3-5. A perfect introduction to dance this class focuses on building a foundation of proper technique and terminology while teaching students to develop a love of movement and self expression. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

DANCE EXPLORATION
For dancers ages 4-6. This is a fun introductory dance class for young children and will introduce them to ballet, jazz, and tap. Equal time will be spent on each style and teaching them the basic skills of each style, while developing an appreciation for dance. Students are required to bring ballet and tap shoes to class. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

PRE-BALLET
For dancers ages 5-6. Students will begin their training in ballet with an introduction to body positions, terminology, barre work, and beginning ballet combinations. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

BALLET EXPLORATION
For dancers ages 6-8. This class presents beginning ballet students with a solid foundation of positions, technique, and terminology with a curriculum that introduces students to barre work, ballet combinations, and skills. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

Ballet

BALLET 1
For dancers ages 6 and up. Beginning ballet students will build upon the exercises of Pre-Ballet and learn additional combinations and steps. A continued emphasis will be placed on posture and alignment. Barre, center, and travelling work will be incorporated into each class. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

BALLET 2
Teacher approval required. For placement evaluation or confirmation, contact heather.dennen@olmstedperformingarts.com. Intermediate class for dancers who have previous training and have an understanding of basic ballet terminology/vocabulary. Barre work focuses on alignment and technique. Center and travelling exercises, focus on performance, turns, jumps, and control. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

BALLET 5/6

Advanced concepts are presented as students work toward executing advanced steps in combinations with precision. This class continues to challenge technique and improve performance quality. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

Jazz

JAZZ 1
For dancers ages 6 and up. A beginning level jazz class. Students will learn proper technique as well as exploring rhythm and movement qualities. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

JAZZ 2
Teacher approval required. For placement evaluation or confirmation, contact heather.dennen@olmstedperformingarts.com. Dancers continue to practice basic warm-ups and stretches and begin to advance their work on turns, travelling, and combinations. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

Lyrical

LYRICAL 1
For dancers ages 6 and up. This class, devoted to our youngest Lyrical is a fusion of ballet and jazz techniques and aims to convey the meaning of the music. This class will focus on lyrical dance technique and include a combination at the end. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

Hip Hop

BEGINNING HIP HOP YOUTH
For dancers ages 6-10. Beginning Hip Hop is a fun, upbeat cardio-based class. Students will be introduced to the basic moves and style of hip hop. Students will also learn how to count music and interpret music and choreography. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

BEGINNING HIP HOP TWEEN
For dancers ages 10-15 Beginning Hip Hop is a fun, upbeat cardio-based class. Students will be introduced to the basic moves and style of hip hop. Students will also learn how to count music and interpret music and choreography. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

Tap

TAP 1
For dancers ages 6 and up. Students will begin to put steps and rhythms together, including steps such as flap ball change, drawbacks, and heel twists. There is a focus on learning to understand how the feet work and establishing control of the types of sounds that can be made with them. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

TAP 2
Teacher approval required. For placement evaluation or confirmation, contact heather.dennen@olmstedperformingarts.com. Students will begin to speak and write rhythms. Dancers will expand on steps and rhythms from Tap 1, and learn more complex steps such as Cincinnati, Maxiford, and riff. Syncopation is introduced. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.

Musical Theater

MUSICAL THEATER DANCE
For dancers ages 7 and up.This class will focus on the styles of dancing and choreography found in stage musicals. Learn the breakdown of quick footwork and specific movement types. A fun class that will benefit any musical theater performer. * Tuition is based on a 36-week school-year session which extends from September 3 through June 1.
